George William Crawford |
George William Crawford was born on July 17, 1822 in Ireland, probably Northern Ireland. There is a record of a father, William Crawford, and two young sons: George (age 11) and Oliver (age 3) coming from the port of Londonderry on the Brig "Ann". They arrived in the port of Philadelphia on August 19, 1833. Although we do not know for sure this is our George Crawford, it is possible. There is also a subsequent US Census record for a George Crawford living in London, Madison, Ohio in 1850 with the occupation of "stage driver". We know that George was in Ohio about this time because he married his first wife Catherine Grimes in Ohio on November 20,1853. George and Catherine had 4 children, all born in Gambier, Knox County, Ohio. Catherine died on October 22, 1863 in Gambier. George and his children left Ohio and traveled to Illinois where he met and married Rebecca Ann Roberts in Springfield about 1864. Rebecca had been married previously to a William H. Pilgrim in Fayette, Illinois, but the marriage was dissolved in less than a year. Rebecca and William Pilgrim had no children. In addition to the 4 children George had with his first wife Catherine, he and Rebecca had 4 more children. The first two, daughters Fannie Anne and Sadie, were born in Springfield. By 1877 the family had moved to Hendricks, Chautauqua County, Kansas. The last two children, sons James W. and Lin, were born in Kansas. George died there about 1886, when he was about 65 years of age. George's daughter Fannie married another Crawford (though unrelated) in 1887. She and her husband Charles Crawford moved west to Chromo, Colorado; a bustling logging and mining town high up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado near the New Mexico border. George's widow Rebecca and children Sadie, James, Lin and half-brother John also moved to the Chromo, Colorado, area by 1890. |
